Description:

The goal for the project is to build an electric sports car with performance exceeding its petrol origins, and a minimum of 100km range on a single charge. Plus, as a demo car for ZEVA, it must look as good as it runs!

After much research, design and deliberation, a series 1 Mazda MX5 was decided upon. The vehicle was finally purchased in April 2007. It is a 1990 model MX5 with 215000kms on the clock, and generally in very good condition for its age.

Electric vehicles are often thought of as slow, underpowered and unexciting – the 'golf cart' stereotype. People familiar with electric vehicles such as the the Tesla Roadster, Wrightspeed X1 or AC Propulsion TZero will know this is not always the case, but in the eyes of the general public we still have a long way to go.

Being a convertible sports car, Mazda MX5s are not the sort of vehicle people would expect to be electric. They are very light and fairly aerodynamic, which helps maximise performance and range. However, with only a 1.6L engine they are often considered underpowered – this gives an electric conversion the chance to easily exceed the performance of the original ICE powered vehicle.
